The Cream of the Crop: Top Ten Rides at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando
Article by Todd Blay
You've spent a lot of time and quite a bit of money planning your Walt Disney World holiday. The last thing you want is to waste time waiting on lines for rides that may not end up being that fun. Focus your energies on the good stuff. Here's how.
First Stop Is Space Mountain
Magic Kingdom's Space Mountain is a huge park favorite. No wonder. You can already feel the suspense while still waiting on the queue, and your anticipation is heightened as you watch the illuminated cars zooming through the track in pitch darkness. On this high speed coaster with dual tracks you won't even be able to see the person right in front of you as the world dims and asteroids and meteors shower the surrounding darkness.
Second Stop Is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
A little more easy going, and also at the Magic Kingdom, this roller coaster is fashioned after a 19th Century train in a gold mining camp. Kids as young as 7 years old can already get on this ride.
Third Stop Dinosaur
For this Animal Kingdom ride, it might be best to leave the younger kids with grandma as this could get pretty scary. Take a virtual trip back to the age of the dinosaurs in a time machine led by a researcher trying to find an Iguanodon. Be prepared for some not so nice giants roaring overhead.
Fourth Stop Primeval Whirl
You might be wondering if there really is truth in the theory that meteors killed all the dinosaurs. This whimsical, cheerfully decorated coaster and track at Animal Kingdom will whip you back in time to find out. Be warned, however, that the jerking can be quite forceful, so this ride is definitely not for everybody.Fifth Stop Expedition Everest
Not only Disney's tallest coaster, but also one of the few that goes backwards as well as forwards, Expedition Everest is one of the newest and best rated attractions at Disney. For ages ten and up, this Animal Kingdom ride can go as fast as 50 miles an hour.
Sixth Stop Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin
This is one ride that every Toy Story fan must get on at the Magic Kingdom. Really, joining the Star Command armed with a laser gun on a mission to battle the Evil Emperor Zurg is definitely a dream-come-true for many. This interactive ride is sure to be a hit amongst kids of all ages.
Seventh Stop Star Tours
Head over to Hollywood Studios if you appreciate Star Wars, are at least eight, and don't mind the dark. You will love this experience. Fly to the Moon Endor and get attacked by enemy warships as flight simulators take you through an interactive movie made by George Lucas.
Eighth Stop Rock n Roll Coaster
Don't miss going on a rock concert backlit in neon with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. Steven Tyler and neon? This is definitely something you can't miss! The pre-show is a bit longer than the actual ride at Hollywood Studios, but the inversions and corkscrews definitely make the whole experience worth it.
Ninth Stop Astro Orbiter
Check out the panorama of Tomorrowland from the vantage point of the Astro Orbiter, situated atop the People Mover's platform. From a car that looks like a rocket ship you'll travel among the orbiting planets.
Last But Not Least Peter Pan's Flight
And now we've come to the last and definitely not the least. Everyone dreams of flying. This ride will take you on Peter Pan's adventure in Neverland on flying pirate ships.
