Does the Playstation3 play older Playstation 2 and the original Playstation games?

Depends on which PlayStation 3 you buy. If you have the 80GB coupled with MGS4, and if the unit has 4 USB slots, then it is compatible with PS2 games. And yes it's worth it to buy a PS3 because you yourself could use it as a Blu-ray player or media storage. Unlike the Xbox 360 or the Wii, there's always something for everyone.The 60gb PS3 was the best for playing PS2 games but they are discontinued in Europe (am not sure about the USA though) The current 80GB SKU in Europe WONT play PS2 games either, the earlier ones in USA and Japan did!. 40gb DOES NOT PLAY them either, though all SKU's DO play PS1 games.
It depends on how old your kids are if they below 10 id suggest an Xbox, and i know everyone will go mad on here but its more of a family console like the wii! Anything over 12 get a PS3 its got more features and is future proof! You also dont have to pay to play online as it free unlike MS which charge u £40 a year!
